ABOUT US

Back left: My name is Bella. I am 9 years old. I like reading, watching TV, and playing the piano. I use my writing skills to help my team. This is my first year of FLL Jr. Something I like about being on this team is being with new friends.

Back right: My name is Sonny. I am 9 years old. I like to swim, play video games, and play outside with my friends. Some things that I do to help my team are listen to the other team members, share with them, and use my building skills. This is my first FLL Jr project. My favourite parts about being on a team this year have been creating our team name and our field trips.

OUR SEARCH FOR INFORMATION

This year’s challenge was to learn about water. First, we learned about the water cycle.

Next, we learned about how much water humans use. Some examples are with our pets (like fish), cooking, washing our bodies, watering plants, and in our toilets.

After that, we visited a primary water treatment facility. That is where they clean water and send it to our homes for us to use.

The last thing we did was visit a wastewater treatment facility. Dirty water from our homes goes there. They clean the water using good bacteria and then send it to the river.

OUR PROJECT: DISHWASHER

For our project, we decided to learn more about dishwashers. The water for dishwashers comes from Lake Erie or Lake Huron. It is cleaned by a primary water treatment facility and then it travels through pipes to our homes.

We put our dirty dishes with food, germs, and bacteria into the dishwasher with soap to clean the dishes. We turn it on and the water and soap clean the dishes.

Clean dishes come out of the dishwasher while the dirty water with used soap, food bits, and germs goes down the drain and to a wastewater treatment facility. There, the water gets cleaned and then goes into the river.

OUR MODEL: WHAT IT SHOWS

Our model shows water coming from Lake Erie into the Elgin Water Supply System (the pump). The water flows to the house. In the house, there is a worker fixing a dishwasher.

Then the water flows out of the house through the pipes to the wastewater treatment facility.

At the wastewater treatment facility, they clean the water. You can see the workers cleaning the dirty water. Then they put it into the Thames River.

At the wastewater treatment facility there is also a truck that is taking away solid waste to be burned.

OUR MODEL: WHAT MOVES AND WHY

The truck:
The wheels and axles let the truck roll.
The steering wheel is a wheel and axle that lets the truck turn.
The windshield is an inclined plane. Rain can slide down it.

The house:
The door is a lever. It can open and close.

The wastewater treatment facility:
Our special door to the wastewater facility operates on a lever that goes up and down.

The people:
The people in our project have levers for their arms and legs. They move up and down or forward and back.

Our pump has many simple machines:
The handle is attached to gears that turn to make the wheel and axle of the spinner move.
